Welcome

The goal of the Russian River Watershed GIS (RRGIS) project is to create a comprehensive spatial data resource for addressing salmonid recovery in the Russian River watershed. The Russian River watershed is home to three species of salmonids listed as threatened under the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA). The Russian River watershed has a long history of assessment and conservation efforts by governmental agencies, private citizens and watershed groups. Years of monitoring and research have produced rich data sets and current efforts are producing more refined, detailed information. Management issues are complex, with multiple public agencies working together and with private landowners to manage resources within the watershed.

Prior to the development of the Russian River Watershed GIS, numerous high quality data layers were housed in multiple locations, with no centralized source for distribution and compilation. The RRGIS project was proposed by NOAA Fisheries and Circuit Rider Productions, Inc. (CRP) to respond to the need for a centralized source of GIS data in support of salmonid conservation, management and restoration.

Although the RRGIS is designed to serve NOAA Fisheries as a tool for salmonid recovery planning, the project is intended to assist a wider audience with salmonid conservation and restoration, ranging from public resource managers and planners to landowners and community groups.
