Originator: The original CALWATER22 layer was developed as a coverage named calw22a by Andy Richardson (916) 263-3649. Rr_wshed represents the boundary of the Russian River basin. The calw22a watersheds were selected based on their attribute values from the HUNAME field which indicates the Hydologic Unit Name of each watershed. The selected watersheds were then dissolved based on a dissolver field created by Circuit Rider Prodictions, Inc. The resulting file (rr_wshed.shp) illustrates the extent of the Russian River basin with the sub-watersheds removed from the file. This metadata file incorporates information that is specific to this layer as well as information that is available in the original metadata file for the calw22a coverage (calw22a.txt). Portions of this metadata file that borrow text from calw22a.txt are indicated in quotation marks.

Abstract:

Rr_wshed.shp describes the boundary of the Russian River watershed. 

 

Purpose:

The purpose of this file is to provide GIS users with a layer of the Russian River Watershed which is not divided into smaller, sub-hydrologic units.  This layer provides users with a layer that can be used to clip datasets that describe geographic regions larger than the area of the watershed.

 

This dataset was developed through querying the Calwater 2.2 dataset for hydrolic unts that compose the Russian River watershed.  The resulting query describes the Russian River watershed and it’s sub-hydrologic units.  This file was then dissolved based on a common attribute field.  The dissolve geo-processing task was accomplished using ArcView 3.1’s Geoprocessing Wizard applications.  The resulting theme illustrates the spatial extent of the Russian River watershed.

"CALWATER boundaries were digitized on a 1:24,000-scale base and
thus very accurately divide surface water features depicted on
1:100,000-scale Digital Line Graph hydrography. However, CALWATER
delineations are primarily designed to be administrative reporting
units, and the boundaries should not be used to define
authoritative drainage area above a given point as a portion of
their definition includes non-physical boundaries, particularly in
valley floor and urbanized coastal regions. Attribute completeness
is good. Compatibility with existing state and federal watershed
delineations is good, except where explicitly different boundary
configurations are applied."
